Museums In Lisbon

Today was a day to see many museums in the downtown area. We started our day with some Pastel's de Belem as we bought many home yesterday for our future breakfasts, and headed out to catch the bus north.

We started our day by visiting the National Tile Museum...yes ceramic tile. It was actually very interesting and I now have more appreciation for the art as I now know the laborious process. The tile was left over from the Moore influence and many contained the national royal color of yellow. From that museum we decided to catch a bus down to the Military Museum and learn about the Portuguese artillery, outfits and war contributions.

We worked up an appetite and made our way over to Commerce Square, which was once the site of the Palace, and now government office buildings to have some lunch. The Portuguese are tricky with their appetizers - they have break and olives on the table but once you touch them you pay for them and it ends up being an extra $15 dollars! So we have learned not to touch them or barter by saying we only ate out of 1 bread basket and did not have olives. :-) After lunch we walked around the square and snapped a few photos. There is a famous statue and arch that we could not miss. (side note: my pics are not loading properly on the computer, and the wifi is not strong enough to upload a picture so I will add them when I return..sorry!)

After lunch we walked over to the Contemporary Art Museum, which provided a good time as most contemporary art does for me. It was in an old cookie factory! Since we stopped in the contemporary art museum we only thought it right to go to the museum of ancient art next. On the way we walked by Sol e Pesca, which is an anchovy/canned fish restaurant that Anthony Bordain stopped at. We decided that eating there was not on our to do list, snapped a picture and headed on our way. Once again we almost successfully navigated the bus down to our final museum of the day and stayed until closing time. It was an interesting museum that had fancy chalices and paintings out of the bible.

By this time our feet were hurting, and since we now know how to navigate the bus map we snagged a bus home and our currently resting our feet. We are heading out in a few to check out A Pescaria - A fish restaurant!

Tomorrow our plan is to head up to Fatima!
